The Elkton Colored School Museum and Cultural Center, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization based in the Town of Elkton, Maryland. The purpose of the Elkton Colored School Museum & Cultural Center, Inc. is to preserve the legacy of the Elkton Colored School. During the period between1864 and 1867, a subscription school was established in Elkton Maryland, devoted to the education of the African American children. Classes were held in Providence A.M.E Church, where the seeds for the Elkton Colored School were initially planted. The Elkton Colored School was the first school for African Americans in Cecil County.
The Elkton Colored School Museum & Cultural Center, Inc. seeks to preserve the memories, stories and legacies of African American Students who attended the school during segregation and to provide educational and informational activities to increase public awareness of contributions to American culture made by persons of African descent.
The Elkton Colored School Museum & Cultural Center, Inc will be a catalytic center focused on:
Preserving and interpreting Black heritage
Stimulating affordable housing
Spurring minority businesses
Providing financial literacy and offering space for community involvement and engagement.
