Description:
The Volunteer Ombudsman Representative serves as an advocate through regular visits to nursing homes and licensed assisted living facilities. They work to provide a voice to concerns of residents in long term care settings by:
- Providing support and guidance to resolve conflicts
- Protecting privacy and confidentiality
- Championing for improvements and changes
Time Commitment:
- At least one year commitment to program;
- Specific number of weekly/monthly hours to be determined.
Details & Training Required:
- Become designated as an Ombudsman through the completion of an initial orientation and standardized training program approved by the Maryland Department of Aging.
- Attend and participate in training meetings in the local ombudsman program to enhance basic skills and discuss issues of concern.
- Attend additional training when required by local program or State Long Term Care Ombudsman.
- Participate in ongoing supervision, support and continuing education when provided by staff professionals in the Ombudsman Program.
- Due to COVID 19 all training is currently virtual but will be transitioning to in person post-pandemic.
- As of 4/1/2021 all nursing home and assisted living facility visitations completed by the Volunteer Ombudsman Representative will be conducted in person.
- The Volunteer Ombudsman Representative must adhere to all COVID 19 safety guidelines and regulations while making visits.
