As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater. From helping people effected by disasters, like home fires and floods, to supporting the collection of lifesaving blood, you can make a difference. Currently, our biggest need is for the following volunteers:

Responsibilities

    • Works as part of an assigned team to respond to local disasters within two hours.
    • Delivers immediate direct client assistance in accordance with Red Cross standards and procedures.
    • Works with on-scene lead to assess whether additional resources/support are required and communicates those needs to DAT Leadership.
    • Attends regularly scheduled team/DAT meetings as required by Chapter/Region.
    • Commits to being available during assigned shifts and communicate scheduling conflicts with DAT Leadership.
    • Other responsibilities as assigned by DAT Leadership.
Time Commitment
    • NOTE:   In-person commitment!  Some virtual components so MUST be capable of using and navigating basic technology (video chat, use apps, Microsoft products, proficient in search engines).
      Time:
      5-10 hours Weekly

    • These shifts are "on-call" meaning that during any given shift you are scheduled for, you must be ready to respond should you be called to a disaster scene, most of which are home fires.  Example: In a given month, you select to be on call for 3 shifts of 8-hour blocks.  You may be called zero times, or you may be called three or more times, depending on the number of fires in the area during your shift. But you have to be ready to respond. 
    • Flexible, as you can choose your own shifts throughout a given month. 
    • Committed to completing 10 hours of online self-paced training within a month
Qualifications 

Required:

    • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the American Red Cross
    • Remains current with all required training
    • Able to respond reliably when on call
    • Able to follow Red Cross DAT and other related standards and procedures
    • Ability to learn and use Red Cross systems, including RC Respond and online interfaces
    • Ability to work in challenging and stressful conditions such as poor air quality, uneven ground, adverse weather, etc.
    • Must have a valid driver's license and/or a timely, reliable way to get to the scene
    • Ability to take direction from steady-state and operational leadership.
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills

Ability to:

    • Stand for two-hour periods
    • Sit for two-hour periods
    • Walk on uneven terrain
    • Walk for two miles during a shift
    • Work in extreme heat and/or humidity
    • Work in extreme cold
    • Spend hours writing
    • Speak clearly on the phone and in-person
    • Climb two or more flights of stairs
    • Drive in the daytime and at night
