Volunteer: Pet Therapy Teams

*** Attention Cecil County Residents!  PAWS is looking to continue to expand in Cecil County. We have been adding new places to visit and scheduling several Community Destress Events in Cecil County. PAWS needs volunteers with their own gentle, affectionate pets to help us spread hope and healing throughout our community. Our greatest need is for Cecil County volunteers with weekday availability. If you have been on the fence about becoming a PAWS for People pet therapy team with your pet (dog, cat or bunny), please consider applying and signing up for training.  Thank you!!!

***

Are you and your pet ready to become a therapy team with PAWS for People? Review the questions below:
Does your pet reliably and consistently SIT?
Does your pet reliably and consistently DOWN?
Does your pet reliably and consistently STAY?
Does your pet reliably and consistently COME WHEN CALLED? Does your pet reliably and consistently walk well on a leash? (This implies no pulling, crossing sides, etc.  This also means walking well while using a flat collar – no prong collars, harnesses, etc.  Exceptions will be made for dogs with breathing issues.) Is your pet responsive to you/his or her name, both in public and at home? Is your pet comfortable in and around new situations and people?  Have you exposed him/her to a variety of different settings and types of people? Does your pet react appropriately around other animals? (E.g. no pulling, jumping, aggressiveness, fearfulness, extreme excitability) Did you answer 'YES' to most of our questions? You are most likely ready to be a therapy team! Click here to complete our Membership Application. Did you answer 'sometimes' or 'maybe' to some of our questions? Sounds like your pet may need to work on 1-2 behaviors.  Please work on these behaviors at home until you can answer YES, or sign up for a Target Training class to focus on these specific behaviors. Click here for information on our Target Training classes! Did you answer 'no' or 'not reliable' to many of our questions (e.g. more than five)? Don't worry, you'll be ready soon! In the meantime, please work on these behaviors with a trainer or register for PAWS' What Every Therapy Dog Needs to Learn class.

Volunteer: Photographer

Our organization is in need of a photographer to take pictures at our events and also still (professional) pictures of our board members, etc.

The hours are evenings and weekends and sometimes during the day.  You would be given ample notice for each event, probably weeks in advance.

This would be a great opportunity for someone that is in college and needed to have opportunity to do additional pictures for their portfolio.  This would also be a great opportunity for someone that is retired to get involved without too much commitment.

Family friendly events, so bringing your spouse and/or kids is usually ok.

Looking forward to meeting the right fit for our organization.

Volunteer: Spanish-Speaking Wish Granters

We are in great need of Spanish-speaking Wish Granters! Work in teams of two with wish children and their families to help make wishes come true. This involves conducting an initial interview with the family to determine the child’s wish, working with Make-A-Wish® staff to help fulfill the wish and throwing a wish party for the child when the wish is granted. Make-A-Wish staff will handle the major details of the wish. We ask volunteers to be the direct point of contact with the family, and most importantly, to keep the child excited about the wish prior to its granting! This is a long term volunteer opportunity. Time commitment depends on the type of wish you are working on and how many at one time. The wish interview and granting almost always take place in the evening or on a weekend. You schedule this with the family and your wish partner. Flexibility in your evening and weekend schedule is fairly important. Wish-granting volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have reliable transportation. Also required are a signed Conflict of Interest/Ethics Agreement (annual), cleared background check and a one-day training session. Background checks must be updated every three years.

Volunteer: Wish Granters

***We will be hosting a Cecil county training on 12/9/2018! If you are interested in becoming a wish granter, this is a wonderful chance. Please submit all applications no later than 12/1/2018***
